  • Son of Mrs Norah Sunderland of Havelock North.

    After his initail Naval training on HMS Ganges, Tom Sunderland served 4 months as an Ordinary Seaman on HMS Vansittart (a destroyer), went to Officer school, served on HSM King Alfred and finally in served in Combined Operations.

    Promotion list as temporary Sub-Lieutenant, Evening Post, January 1943

    Tom Sunderland was Commanding Officer of LCI (L) 380, LCT 1086 and then LCI (L) 125.

    For the duration of the war Tom was 'on loan' from the RNZNVR to the Royal Navy.
