  • John Ross was a Merchant Seaman for some of World War II.

    He served on ships in the Atlantic and Russian convoys.

    While no ship was lost while he was aboard,
    the 9000-ton tanker KARS, on which he served for all of 1941, was torpedoed and sunk in February 1942 off Nova Scotia – on its next voyage.

    He joined the Royal Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. At the end of the war he returned to the Mediterranean and Italy and was discharged from the Royal Navy in August 1946. Then returned to the Merchant Navy.

    At the end of the war in Europe John Ross also went to India on the way to the Pacific.

    Arctic Star received June 2013.

    In 1952 he joined the New Zealand Army and served in K-Force in Korea.

    Medal of Ushakov received September 2014.
