  • "I was engaged to be married when I joined the Army in 1940. My fiance, Peggy Reyland, waited three years for me. We have now been married 57 years and have 4 middle-aged children.

    The war was a great experience but I thank God that my boys have not had to go through such a time when young lives are easily wasted.

    I am now 82 years old and my wife is 80, so we have much to be thankful for."
