  • Granddad loved talking about the war. He talked about how it was a big adventure. He lied about his age to get in as I believe he was only 15. When he was on the battlefield in Italy, his arm was almost completely taken off. He was ready to die but his friend wouldn't let him and managed to help him to a barn where thankfully, they found the allies getting ready to take out the wounded. He recalled as they were leaving on the back of a Jeep, a large bomb exploded which lifted the Jeep back wheels. Thankfully, he made it back to NZ on a ship. On the way his arm was amputated. It never slowed him down though. He often talked about how he missed the camaraderie and the friendships he made. He lived till his 80s and is missed greatly.
