Lionel Buswell Underwood

Portrait from family records from Lionel's time with the RNZN from 1942-1945 when he trained as a RDF  (later Radar) Operator; he was seconded to the Royal Navy and served with HMS Shoreham in the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean when his ship was assigned as an escort for the supply convoys to the island of Malta, then under siege. His ship was also involved in the surrender of the Italian fleet. HMS Shoreham was sent to Capetown for refit when the crew were billeted with local families. In 1990, Lionel was presented with a 50th Anniversary Medal for service in the Supply and Defence of the Island of Malta in WW2. He returned to NZ in 1944 and was assigned to coastal radar stations at Cape Brett and Mt Victoria in Auckland
