    Tennis enthusiast and member of 21st Battalion tennis team which won the 1943 NZ Divisional unit Championship

    Trained with the Scottish Regiment in Wanganui, Tauherenikau and Paekakariki

    Sailed at age 21 for Egypt. Served as a signaller in North Africa, part of the battles for Sangro River and Monte Cassino

    Returned briefly to NZ on compassionate leave, when his father died suddenly at age 42

    Met his future wife (Zeela) through a wartime friendship with Frank Bell a soldier with the 2NZEF, Scottish Regiment and 21st Battalion. His wife Zeela was Frank's sister

    Appears briefly in the film marking the 60th anniversary of the battle at Cassino walking around Vatican City whilst on leave.
