  • Chaplain Hopkins had been briefly taken prisoner when German paratroopers overran No 7 British General Hospital and No 6 NZ Field Ambulance. The prisoners were rescued by a platoon from 19 Battalion.

    Hopkins was one of four chaplains who volunteered to stay with the seriously wounded when Crete was evacuated and he was again taken prisoner. AWMM
