  • Albert Andrew was an officer in the New Zealand Volunteer Force in Christchurch when he became the first New Zealander to take advantage of a scheme which offered commissions in the British Army to officers of colonial defence forces.. He served with the British Army in India and transferred to the Indian Army.

    During the Boer War he was seconded to the New Zealand Military Forces and was attached to the 6th and 10th Contingents.

    He took an interest in military affairs and published several books on the subject. He was also an accomplished linguist, fluent in Persian, Arabic, Hindustani and Mahratti.

    During World War 1 he commanded an Indian Army infantry brigade group in Mesopotamia and was mentioned in despatches five times. He was made CMG.

    He retired from the Indian Army in 1920 and returned to Christchurch and was Chief Commissioner of the Boy Scouts' Association to 1929.

    His father was named John Richards Andrew. AWMM
