    • Father was named John Charles Wallace Bateman. AWMM
    • He was of British, Ngaitahu, NgatiMamoe, Waitaha descent.
      He also served in the RNZAF (71034) in WWII as YMCA secretary at TeRapa, TeAwamutu and elswhere. He was boarded / discharged from war service in 1947 but continued serving in the airforce till the time of his death.
      Three of his brothers served in WWI: Charles Bateman 261A Australian Army; Frank Harold Bateman 18/34 Sapper in the Samoan contingent; Cyril Percy Bateman Sapper 4/373. Charles & Cyril both landed with the main body at Gallipoli on 25th April. Cyril died of illness three months later.
      Three of his sons served overseas in WWII: Dudley G Bateman 466455 32nd Infantry Battalion & Signals; J Arthur 6788 22nd Infantry Battalion, POW; John Wallace (Jack/Wally) 4039 Signals. His other two sons served at home: VJ(Buster) Bateman RNZNavy; Barry Home Guard. His four son-in-laws all served in WWII: RJH Hollis army; Percy Mills navy & air fleet arm; Ray Travers RAF;Laurence (Lorry) Pollock RNZNavy.
