    • Father was named William Cameron. AWMM
    • Parents: William Fredrick Cameron (1846 - ) and Catharine Mary Fraer (~1845).

      His father was born in Aboyne, Scotland, to the Cameron/MacKenzie families, the Commissioners of the Isle of Lewis. His uncle, John Cameron (1851 -1885), was a renowned journalist killed at the Battle of Abu Kru, Sudan.

      His mother was the daughter of the famous Michael Fraer (1816-1870) of the Battle of the Windmill fame in the Canadian rebellion of 1838 and transported to Tasmania, where Cathrine was born)

      William Francis was born in Bendigo, Central Otago, where his father had several gold claims, including the Come-in-Time mine, and set up the old Eureka stamper at the now-preserved site at the old Come-in-Time mine head.

      William snr also had the lease to the Logoantown Hotel (run by his mother until it was burnt down in 1880) and also owned the Bendigo Hotel (run by his father's other 'partner', Mary Denny, with whom William Jr. stayed with his half-siblings and sisters after his parents disappeared in about 1880).

      In 1910, he took one of the Bendigo ballot (selection) blocks, now a part of Bendigo Station, and farmed in the district while retaining interests in gold mining with his siblings.
