  • Biographical information The four PHELAN brothers - originally from Enfield, a very small town in Victoria - all enlisted in WW1. One enlisted in Victoria, Australia, and the other three enlisted in NZ. Those three were all killed on the Western Front at places now in modern day France and Belgium. Their names were Patrick Pierce PHELAN, James McDonald PHELAN, and Edmond Matthew PHELAN. The one brother who returned to his family was Francis Simon PHELAN. All of the brothers are recorded on the grave of their parents, Annie and John PHELAN, in the Ballarat Cemetery. One of the brothers married in New Zealand.
