  • Phillps left for France, from England, on 26 May and joined the 2 Battalion, Canterbury Regiment at Basseville. The 2 Battalion Canterbury Regiment had suffered badly during the Battle of Meessines earlier in June, Phillips was one of the much-needed reinforcements.(Church, p.182)

    Phillips was wounded in action on 8 July and taken to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 26 July. He died of wounds to his face and a secondary haemorrhage on 8 August 1917. (Church, p.182) AWMM
