"It would appear that the recruitment process had not quite been completed and two men, 16/1126 Pineki of Alofi and 16/1173 Taufakavalu of Tuapa, were only partly processed before departure. Their papers of attestation show that the weighing machine had already disappeared and although their medical examinations were otherwise completed, their actual enlistment and swearing in had to wait until three days into the voyage to New Zealand." "Another ten days sailing passed before Capetown was reached and one more Niuean death occurred, that of 16/1126 Private Pineki of Alofi. He had spent eight days in the ship's hospital and died of pneumonia early on the morning of 4 July. On that day thankfully the last burial at sea took place." (Pointer 2000, p. 59)
