  • Player left for France on the 27 May, it is there that he joined the 3 Battalion, Wellington Regiment.

    On 4 October 1917, when fighting in the third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) Player received gunshot wounds to his left knee, which necessitated amputation of his leg. (Church, p.162)

    He was transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 12 October but died soon after his arrival. (Church, p.162) AWMM
