    • His father was named Andrew Howell. AWMM

A message from the sea that has been a long time on its travels reached us from one of the members of the Fourth Contingent who went to South Africa from Gisborne in 1900. Upon a scrap of newspaper he scribbled the words, "Drayton Grange” 10th Contingent. On board, all well. One day from Sydney. Thomas Howell.
Anyone finding this please send to Poverty Bay Herald. The paper was placed in a porter bottle and consigned to the sea, and was found a few weeks ago on the coast of Queensland. Miss Sarah A. Till, writing from Walker street, Cooktown, to the editor states "Dear Sir, On February 3rd (Sunday) a party of picnicers went to Walker's Bay, south of Cooktown, and while strolling along the beach one of them picked up a small porter bottle and saw there was a paper in it, which l am enclosing. Perhaps you, Mr Editor, know something of its writer. I would be pleased to receive an answer did you know of him. It is up to Howell to communicate with the young lady. Here may be the beginning of a romance. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 22 July 2015 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XXXIV, Issue 10910, 2 March 1907, Page 2
