  • After training in Brocton, Porteous joined the Signals Unit at Stevenage, Hertfordshire before leaving for France on 30 April, where he was attached to the Sixth Signals Depot. (Church, p.224)

    In October 1918 Porteous fell ill with influenza. A fortnight later he was poisoned by gas near Le Quesnoy on the first day of the Battle of the Sambre, the final conflict in the Great War. He was immediately transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst, arriving there on 7 November. "He died from bronchial pneumonia on 14 November 1918, three days after the Armistice was signed."
