    • 20 Aug 1902 - Quite a large body of returned troopers arrived home by the Te Anau this morning. The men came by the Orient, which reached Wellington last Friday week, and were chiefly belonging to the Ninth Contingent. Several Gisborne boys who came back by the Orient are still in Wellington, or on their way home. Those who arrived are:—Farrier-Sergeant Parker, Corporals McGough and Cooper, Privates Parker, Wood, Ryan, Dalton, Brown, Morris, Swarbrick, Williamson, Tardieu, and Holford. The local men have the same story to tell of the crowded state of the troopship, and the nature of the food supplied, as has been wired through from Wellington. While the officers were well treated, the men received scant attention; as, for instance, the serving up of fish without being cleaned or the scales removed. Arrived in Wellington the troopers refused to go on to Soames Island, until they were assured that after their kits were fumigated and if they were found not to be suffering from any infectious disease they would not be detained. The Gisborne representatives arrived in excellent health and spirits, well pleased with their ''picnic," albeit a trifle disappointed at not having an opportunity to get a brush with ''Brer Boer." The Ninth, it will be remembered, were at Vereeniging when peace was declared, the Tenth only getting as far as Newcastle.
