    MR ALEXANDER M'LENNAN
There passed away at Maniototo Hospital, Ranfurly, on April 13 one of Maniototo's early settlers, in the person of Mr Alexander M'Lennan. Mr M'Lennan was born at Avoch, Ross-shire, Scotland, in 1863. As a boy of nine years he came to New Zealand in 1872 with his parents, who immediately settled at Kyeburn Diggings. He followed the occupation of mining until 1886, when his parents took up land in White Sow Valley, Wedderburn, and then for a number of years he followed farming pursuits. He took a keen interest in the volunteer movement, and for some time served as lieutenant in the Maniototo Mounted Rifles. On the outbreak of the South African War in 1891 Mr M'Lennan volunteered for active service, and served for three years with the rank of lieutenant in the 5th Contingent under General Bethune. On his return from South Africa he commenced a blacksmith's business at Wedderburn, which he carried on until within a few weeks of his death. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1907. Mr M'Lennan took a keen interest in rifle shooting, and was one of the founders of the Wedderburn Defence Rifle Club and of the Maniototo Rifle Association. For several years he was a member of the Wedderburn School Committee, holding the office at intervals of chairman and secretary, and was one of the promoters of the Wedderburn Hall Association. The funeral, which took place at Naseby on Wednesday, was largely attended. South African veterans acted as pall-bearers, the various bodies with which Mr M'Lennan had been connected being fully represented. The Naseby Brass Band was in attendance at the graveside, and played the " Dead March in Saul," and " Lead Kindly Light." The " Last Post " was sounded. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Young and the Rev. Mr Keen. Mr M'Lennan leaves a widow, two brothers, and three sisters to mourn their loss.
