Caption read: TROOPER J. McRAE,Masterton, 4th Contingent, wounded and had his horse killed at Veutersdorp.
Trooper McRae was wounded and his horse had been killed by enemy gun-fire when he was rescued under heavy enemy gun-fire by a comrade- Trooper (later Captain) W J Hardham VC -which earned Trooper Hardham the Victoria Cross (VC).

  • William James Hardham (South African War 1251) Enlisted twice for the Boer War. He was the first man in New Zealand to receive the Victoria Cross during the Boer War and received it from King Edward VII on 1 July 1902 in London. Rescued Trooper J. McRae (Service number 1301) near Naauwpoort, Transvaal, 28 January 1910
