  • Son of Hector Mockford and Emma Mockford (later Paine).

Charged with theft of whiskey 1902

    Discharged with good character.

Two of his sons also served in WW2: Sidney Gilman Mockford (63026) and Thomas Henry Mockford (29188).

Known as Henry. Author Richard Stowers wrote the following to Gary Mockford 24 June 2009

Private Mockford, Anglo-Boer War and Second World War service

Private Thomas Henry Mockford, who served with the 7th Contingent, is known as the only New Zealand Contingent member to serve in the Second World War in a combat role.

Mockford was born 12th January 1883, but when he enlisted in 1940

(No 15458 Private) he falsified his birth date as 12 January 1902, making him 38 years old at the time, the statutory limit. This took 19 years off his age. In his enlistment details he also stated he had no previous military service. So when Mockford arrived in Egypt with New Zealand's 20th Infantry Battalion in 1941, his actual age was 58 years. While on leave in Cairo he caught up with two sons for a private reunion.

Both of them were serving with New Zealand forces. Of interest his service records state he was absent without leave for two days in June 1941. Mockford fought in Greece and on Crete before being captured in Belhamed, North Africa, on 13 December 1941. When isolated and confronted by enemy tanks, Mockford and hundreds of other infantrymen had no option but to throw up their hands and surrender. He became a prisoner of war for the next three years in Italy and Germany. While in Italy he escaped after 13 months captivity and crossed the Yugoslavia border to join Tito's guerilla forces. He was recaptured by the Germans only to escape twice more, both times being recaptured. He was then sent to prison camp in Austria where he was sent to Wolfsberg to build roads over the mountains. Because of failing health Mockford was repatriated to the United Kingdom on 19 September 1944 and admitted to military hospital in Chester before returning to New Zealand on 27 January 1945. He was met by his two sons - both invalided home with wounds. When given a medical examination Mockford was recorded as being 62 years of age, weighing 11 stone, suffering from chronic muscular rheumatism and needing reading glasses. So the authorities had finally caught up with his age. Mockford earlier falsified his age when he enlisted for the Anglo-Boer War, over-stating his age as 21 years 3 months, when he actually was 18 years 3 months. At the time of the First World War he had six children, making him ineligible to enlist for active service. Mockford died in Dunedin 28 October 1959."

Father was named Hector Mockford. AWMM
