  • I lived in Timaru as a child, when I was about 4 a bronze round plaque was found in my Grandmothers garden. I was given it. It bore the name Ernest George Preen. It is in fact the dead man's penny, given to every family of deceased soldier. I have treasured it for 45 years. I did make contact with a Preen family in Timaru but family history was sketchy. I would love to see a photo of Ernest. He was 44 when he was killed. I don't know if he had any children.
