    • Father was named William Henry Scott. AWMM
    • My great uncle Joseph Alfred Scott (b 1902 Karangahake, d 1989) told me he was named after Joseph William Scott (b 1874 Nelson, d 1961 Palmerston North), because he was born while Joe was at the Boer War. Joe was in the Hawkes Bay Mounted Rifles and was called up for the Coronation of Edward VII. He was on guard duty at Buckingham Palace with the NZ contingent.

      My other great uncle, John Richard Scott (b 1899 Thames, d 1996 Nelson) said that JWS and 3 of his friends were given a horse each by the Orman's, who were horse trainers in Trentham, before they left for the Boer War with the NZ Mounted Rifles. JWS family was advised he was killed in action in South Africa but one Christmas when all the family were together JWS knocked at the front door. His appearance caused quite a commotion as they all believed him to be dead. He had in fact been shot off his horse in action and spent some time convalescing in a hospital in South Africa. I understand that JWS was a Sergeant Major upon retirement from the Army and worked in the Levin Council for many years before passing (Wellington Newspapers obituaries 1961). Public - Kerrie Grahaeme - Other relative - 9 October 2015 - Family members, my great uncles Joseph Alfred Scott b 1902 and his older brother John Richard Scott b 1899 provided this oral family history to me personally.
      The information about rank and later life job came from tributes in the Wellington Newspapers for JWS obituaries in 1961 and the 1 year memorial tribute in 1962.
