    • THE OBITUARY OF JONATHAN SWARBRICK (John's father)
      MR. JONATHAN SWARBRICK.
One of the early settlers of the Wharerata Hill Country, Poverty Bay, Mr Jonathan Swarbrick, died recently, aged 85 years. He was born in England, and went to Queensland, where he took up land. For health reasons, Mr Swarbrick returned to England, and in 1880 came to New Zealand in the 'Lady Jocelyn'. He settled at Te Puke, but, his farm being ruined by the Tarawera eruption, he moved to Gisborne, where he took up an area of virgin bush in the Wharerata district. He had the misfortune to have his home destroyed by a bush fire. Mr Swarbrick is survived by the following children:—Mesdames H. Hudson and Donald Ross, of Auckland, and H. W. Thompson, of Gisborne; Miss E. Swarbrick, of Wellington; and Messrs. J. Swarbrick, of Te Hapara, D. Swarbrick, of Norsewood, G. Swarbrick and S. Swarbrick, of Otoko, and 0. Swarbrick, of Te Piki.
