    • Son of Big John Templeton (1847-1921) of Ayrshire, and Mary Troupe Dawson (1856-1958), Scotland. Husband of Mary Calesta Templeton [Paterson] (1883- 1951) Fortrose, Southland, New Zealand. Father of six children: Edna Catherine Humpries [Templeton] (1907-1930); Albert John Templeton (1908-1970); Clifford Samuel Templeton (1911-1994); Mavis Mary Golden [Templeton] (1913-1977); Norman Leslie Templeton (1915-1986); Florence Clara Wills [Templeton] (1917-1954).       Brief outline of 2nd Boer War service for Samuel Templeton of Waimahaka, Southland.

      The Rough Riders as they were called. A mounted infantry with little military training. Not that it was needed. These were confidant adventurous young men, crack shots and first-class horsemen riding hardy, stocky animals chosen from runs and stations throughout the country. Templeton assembled at Dunedin on 25th March 1900.
      A telegram was sent by Richard John Seddon (NZ Prime Minister) to Samuel's parents to say that No 1692 Private Samuel Templeton was aboard the SS Wakanui, sailing from Capetown being invalided home. They arrived in Wellington on 25th March 1900 and stayed at the Central Hotel before returning home for 6 months leave on sick pay because of remittance fever. Discharged from 5th Contingent 9th October 1900. Returned to South Africa with the 9th Contingent. The 9th contingent sailed on 12th March, two days after Lord Methuen's disaster had been announced. On 4th June, four days after peace was concluded, the 9th contingent had the misfortune to lose Lieutenant Robert M'Keigh, killed, and Lieutenant Henry Rayne, wounded, near Vereeniging. Firing had been started under some misconception. The 9th Contingent sailed for home in July 1902. Discharged 12 March 1902. Received South African war medal clasps for Rhodesia and Transvaal.     • I wish for the year of death for two of Samuels offspring to be provided by way of correction. The year I give can be confirmed by accessing the death record of the historic death register. Edna Catherine Humphries died in 1983 (not 1930) and Florence Clara Wills died in 1997 (not 1954). Public - Allan George - Direct descendant - 25 January 2023 - The DIA death registry.
