    • Before World War I, enteric fever, or typhoid fever, was the scourge of armies, and in the Anglo-Boer War killed more soldiers than enemy action. It is caused by a bacteria entering the body via contaminated food or water. Early symptoms include high fever, headaches and lassitude. Follicles along the intestinal walls later become inflamed, often leading to perforation and hemorrhaging. Other complications include gall bladder, pneumonia or heart failure.

      At the time of the Boer War, there were no antibiotic remedies for the disease. AWMM

    • William was born 31 January 1876 in Scotch St, Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland.
      Father: Robert Watters
      Mother: Mary Watters née Taylor
      Unknown arrival in NZ but was mining with his Uncle William in Back Creek, Rimu on enlistment. His Uncle Alexander was living in Kumara and his half brother, John Anderson Watters was living in Wellington. Public - Nancy - Other relative - 25 March 2016 - Birth certificate
    • There is no apparent attestation information for a Walters with Archives NZ. It appears that this name was misspelt in newspapers at the time and should be for a W. Watters, a correction ran in the West Coast Times on 6 November 1900, p.2.       Trooper Watters, reported dead at the front, died on the 22nd June. Private advice announced his death some weeks ago. Delay in making the official announcement has given his friends a very anxious time. Watters is the first Westlander to succumb at the front.
