  • As a former Commanding Officer of the Auckland Northland Battalion, I was surprised and humbled when my brother Craig discovered Great Uncle Herbert's details in the Cenotaph records. We are a family with some tradition of military service (both historical and current) it was quite an oversight for us not to even be aware of him and his service to his country.

Like so many of the young men of his era, he was taken from us at the Battle of Ypres and I look forward to paying my respects to him when next in Europe.

    We shall remember them.

    Lt Col. (ret'd).

    Report
  • To my great uncle Herbert, killed in a foreign country aged just 20, taken way, way too young. My son Kyle turned 22 on the 23 rd of April, his whole life ahead of him, you did not get that opportunity. My daughter Jorgia turns 19 on Anzac Day, what a special day. Thank you for fighting for us and allowing my family and all New Zealanders to take each day for granted, and for you to make the ultimate sacrifice. I will be coming to Belgium in October to place poppies on your grave, and also the other New Zealand soldiers who rest in your cemetery. See you then brave soldier.
