  • Obituary
    • The death is reported from Dunedin where he was born sixty-five years, ago, of Dr Thomas Burns. He was the son of Mr A J Burns, one of the founders of the Mosgiel Woollen Company, and was a brother of Mr G. B. Burns, of Otautau. He was a grandson of the Rev. Dr Thomas Burns, M.D., who was related to Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, by ties of blood, being the son pf the poet's brother Gilbert, who died in 1827, leaving six sons and five daughters. The subject of this obituary received his early education in Dunedin and then went to Edinburgh where he took his medical degrees, and specialised in mental diseases. He was in change of the Paisley mental hospital for some time, and when in New Zealand he served in the Seacliff Porirua and Avondale hospitals. On the outbreak of the Boer War, Dr Burns immediately offered his services, and sailed with the first contingent on the steamer Waiwera from Dunedin, being the first New Zealand doctor to serve in that war. He returned to the Dominion and sailed again with the seventh contingent. During this period of service he was wounded in the hand and leg. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-colonel. The men loved him for his personality and ability, and on several occasions he proved himself brave under fire. On resuming civil life, Dr Burns practised at Stratford and Inglewood and was for twelve and a half years at Seddonville, on the West coast. The outbreak of war in 1914 saw Dr Burns again in khaki, and he was senior medical officer at Samoa for some time; He later returned to New Zealand, and has since lived in retirement at North-east Harbour. Dr Burns, was a man of kindly and genial disposition and* was loved by 'all with whom he came in contact. He leaves his widow, formerly Miss Rainbird, of North-east Harbour, two brothers, William, of Wellington and Gilbert, of Otautau), and two sisters (Miss Burns and Mrs, J. Haynes, of Wellington) to mourn his passing Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 4 February 2016 - Otautau Standard and Wallace County Chronicle, Volume XXVII, Issue 1359, 1 March 1932, Page 1
