    • Served first with the Colonial Defence Force in Hawke's Bay, then joined the Ngati Porou Contingent against Te Kooti. He then enlisted with the Armed Constabulary and served in the campaign against Titokowaru. In 1870 he joined Ropata Wahawaha in the Urewera campaign against Te Kooti. In 1889 he commanded the force sent to Opotiki to prevent Te Kooti from entering the area. After a series of military appointments, he commanded the 7th Contingent, New Zealand Mounted Rifles, to South Africa, and then the 9th Contingent.       Auckland War Memorial Museum. Scars on the Heart, Boer War display, New Zealand Mounted Rifles. Display item refers Thomas Porter's horse, "Major". "Major was the only horse to return home from the Boer war. "Major" first accompanied Lieutenant Colonel Porter to London for King Edward VII's coronation and was then returned to NZ. AWMM

      After 1865 he changed his name. He is mentioned on a Colonial Defence Force list for Hawkes Bay as Potter, Thomas (now Col.Porter)Annotated by Rymer (Alex Turnbull Lib.MSmisc1367) Mentioned in diary of Archdeacon William Leonard Williams October 10 1865 "L/Corp.Potter came to me this morning to ask if I could lend him a Maori grammar as he was desirous of learning the language"
      (1) Married 9 May 1873 in Turanga (Gisborne), Herewaka POTAE/POTAI, b. ABT 1845 in Tokomaru Bay, N Z (daughter of Tamati Waka Tama-Whakanehua te Rangi & Mereana Tongia), d. 7 DEC 1904 in Christchurch, buried 10 Dec 1904 in Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.
      Herewaka: Robert's death at the age of 21, is said to have broken his mother's heart as she died shortly after however her death certificate shows she died of asthma syncope.
      (2) Married 6 Jan 1906 in Wellington, Florence Ellen SHEPPARD, b. 29 August 1859 in Geelong, Australia (daughter of James Hancer SHEPPARD and Mary Ellen REEVES), d. 16 Sept 1948 in Wellington, NZ, buried Ashes in Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
