  • 24 Hours in Water - One of the few survivors of the cruiser Gloucester, Surgeon-Lieutenant H. G. Singer, son of Dr and Mrs A. L. Singer, of Gisborne, was 24 hours in the water before being picked up. The Gloucester was sunk in the Mediterranean at the time of the evacuation from Crete. For a long time nothing was heard of Surgeon-Lieutenant Singer after he had been officially posted as missing, and it was not until hope had almost been abandoned that word came from a prisoners of war camp in Germany. Now a further communication from him to his parents gives brief details of his escape. At the time of writing he was attached as doctor to a hospital near Rottweil, in the Black Forest.
