  • Thomas Baxter was the son of John Street Baxter and Margaret Wardrup Bethune Baxter, of Invercargill, New Zealand

    Aged 26 at embarkation

    The enlistment papers, available online, suggest that Lindsay enlisted in the Australian forces because he was working for his uncle, Frederick John Cato in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Frederick Cato owned a grocery business and was married to Lindsay's maternal aunt Fanny Bethune. Lindsay's father was a grocer in Invercargill, NZ where Mr Cato had met Miss Bethune.
