    World War II Fighter Ace, Served with the 485 Squadron, 611 Squadron, lead the 142 Wing, Commanding Officer of the 485 Squadron, Royal New Zealand Air Force from July to September 1943, Commanding Officer of the 1 Squadron Royal Air Force (April 1944). Wing Leader of an RAF Spitfire Fighter Wing. Wing Commander 'Johnny' Checketts flew at least 418 sorties, he began his pilot training at 29. He became a member of the Late Arrivals Club after he was shot down over France in September 1943, he evaded capture and arrived safe in England in October 1943. (Hanson, p. 122). AWMM
