    • Son of Chief Petty Officer A.J. Burgham, Ship's Engineer. Allen was not in the RCAF. He was a Lt Cmdr, Royal Canadian Navy Reserves and Commanding Officer of VC 921 RCNR Naval Squadron throughout the 1950's. Prior to that and during World War Two, while he initially enlisted in the RNAF, he transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve Officer, and then seconded to serve with the Royal Navy, Fleet Air Arm as Senior Pilot and Flight Commander of the Fighter flight of 835 Squadron. This after serving with the Royal Navy's (FAA) 804 Squadron. He received two valor awards, The Distinguished Service Cross for actions on an Arctic Convoy in December of 1944 and a Mention in Dispatches (MiD) for action in in the Atlantic (Gibralter Convoys) in May of 1944. He was nominated by his commanding officer, Lord John Kilbracken, for a a bar to his DSC for actions on Arctic Convoy in February of 1945. Kilbracken was opposed by the Captain (Surtees) of the HMS Nairana and the award was denied. Public - Ian - Child - 5 February 2024 - I have letters from Lt Cmdr John Godley, Lord Kilbracken, then CO of 835 Squadron in Feb 1945 and original citations from both the British Admiralty, Whitehall, Buckingham Palace (Investiture command from King George the VI) and from the New Zealand government.
