  • Neil, born in England, came to New Zealand in 1926 and lived with his mother and stepfather in Manaia, Taranaki.

He attended Manaia District High School and Hawera Technical High School, leaving school in 1931 to attend Auckland University.

Neil returned to South Taranaki and gained work as a journalist with the Hawera Star. Neil was both well liked and respected in South Taranaki. Family recount he believed strongly in fighting against the evil forces of Nazism and was one of the first men from Taranaki to volunteer for the Army signing up in September 1939.

Neil was in Greece and also in Crete before he was captured and interned as a prisoner of war (POW).

He spent the remainder of the war as a POW. Neil spoke of his time as a prisoner of war making the following points: "the Red Cross was a fabulous organisation that kept the POWs morale up; most of the POWs helped each other; the low point was being marched in continual snow storms for 6 months across German in 1945 to flee from the advancing Red Army"

On return to New Zealand he married Phyllis Cave York of Hawera on 19 September 1945, at St Mary's Anglican Church Hawera. They had three children: Bruce, Helen and Beverly

Post war Neil worked as a sales representative for the Farmers' Cooperative.

Neil was an enthusiastic committee member of the Kaponga RSA.

Neil is remembered as a caring and helpful person to his family and community.

A memorial wooden seat, outside the Manaia Golf Club, both Neil and Phyllis were keen golfers, was donated by the family after Neil's death.
