  • Son of Joseph and Annie Carroll

    Terence Carroll enlisted at Chatham, England, with the Royal Navy on 24th September 1914 for a Short Service engagement of 5 + 7 years. His initial rank was Stoker 3rd Class.

    He is described as being 5ft 7 1/2 inches high, with dark, hard blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He had a tattoo of a ship under full sail and setting sun on his right forearm.

    His service covered the following ships:

    HMS Pembroke II (Stoker III: 24 Sept 1914 - 17 March 1915). His service and character are recorded as Very Good during this time.

    HMS Attentive (Stoker III: 18 March 1915 - 31 March 1915). His service and character are recorded as Very Good during this time.

    HMS Victory II (Stoker III: 1 April 1915 - 27 August 1915). His service and character are recorded as Very Good during this time.

    HMS Victory II (Stoker I: 28 August 1915 - 30 June 1917)

    HMS Victory X (Stoker I: 1 July 1917 - 19 August 1917). His service and character are recorded as Very Good during this time. At this point he ran away from HMS Victory and enlisted in the Army in a state of desertion from the Royal Navy.

    He re-entered the Royal Navy on 8 January 1919 and after a period of 42 days detention was assigned to HMS Hannibal (Stoker I: 12 February 1919 - 16 April 1919). In November 1915, Hannibal became a depot ship for auxiliary patrol craft at Alexandria, Egypt, supporting both forces operating from Egypt and those in the Red Sea until June 1919 so he would have been located in Egypt at this time.

    HMS Hannibal (Stoker I: 17 April 1919 - 30 June 1919)

    HMS Hannibal (Stoker I: 1 July 1919 - 6 July 1919). At this point he again ran away. His record shows that "he is to be claimed for further Naval Service and his CO is requested to hand him over to Naval authorities in Alexandria.

    Reported as rating serving in RN at this shore establishment in September 1918 AWMM
