  • Lanning arrived in 1874 as a Vogel Scheme immigrant from Cornwall. He had only been in New Zealand for two years before enlistment and lived in a tent up the Karaka Valley, Thames

    Husband of Catherine Lanning (nee Gould)

    His 2 daughters were 2 years old and 6 days old at enlistment. He went on to father 13 children and as his great grandson observed fulfilled one of the aims of the Vogel Scheme, which was to populate New Zealand

    Lanning did not originally qualify for a grant of confiscated land. In 1888 he was awarded 30 pounds in lieu of land. AWMM
