  • To my great Uncle Dencil. I wanted you to know that, despite our family never meeting you, we remember you on Anzac Day and at other times. I have a photograph of you as a boy. I cannot even guess at what you and others who fought in war went through. The Battle of the Somme took your life at age 29 years . You were just beginning your life when it was cut short. The story is that your mother and father never got over the death of their only son ( you) and their only daughter ( who died 1 week after giving birth to my father in May 1915). You were a farmer from New Zealand fighting in a far off land. They were bereaved parents who had lost both of their children when you died on 28/3/1918. I am remembering you , not to glorify the horror that war is, but to remind you , you are not forgotten by your brother in law's children. Vale Great Uncle Dencil

  • Dencil George Reynolds was my great uncle. My father was his brother in law. Whilst saddened by the loss of the only son of my great grandparents, at the Battle of the Somme, I remember an uncle I never met and knew every Anzac Day. Vale Uncle Dencil from all your relatives in Australia.
