    • Husband of Marygold; father of James, Mary, Cathy, Rosy, Bridget.

Wing commander Miller served with the RAF from September 1939 and transferred to RNZAF in September 1943. He served with Bomber Command from 1940-42; No. 91 Group, 1943-44; CFI No.24 OTU, 1944-45.

"Member of the 'Goldfish Club'; Official History records that on 5 November 1940 Flight Lieutenant Miller was the captain of 77 Squadron Whitley which carried out a solo night attack on Turin, flying thorugh atrocious weather en-route to and from the target. After flying for over 11 hours they were forced, through lack of fuel, to ditch at sea. The crew were all picked up, from their dinghy, by an RN trawler, 4 and a half miles off the North East Coast of England" (Hanson, p. 350).

      Known as Hugh AWMM
    • On 6 November 1940 he had to ditch his aircraft in the North Sea off the UK coast on return from a bombing raid to the Fiat Motor Works in Turin, Italy. He was, with the rest of the crew, rescued by a passing steamer and taken ashore.
