  • Herbert Richardson was the son of George James and Margaret Edith Richardson, of 1A, Norana Avenue, Auckland, New Zealand.

'Raced into the firing line. Our fellows had no trench, just an old and shallow water course and we were out-numbered five to one. It was death to put your head up to fire. Machine guns and trenches about 200 yards in front. Poor old Roy Lambert tried but was killed instantly - hit in three places. I had just been joking saying that he would go into a charge as if he was scoring a try. Lieutenant Richardson was mortally wounded on my right and little O'Meara of our section was shot in the knee on my left.' (from 'War Diary of Pte F. E. McKenzie 12/190' -copy in Auckland War Memorial Library MS 96/13)

    Attended Auckland Grammar School.

Attended Auckland University College (now the University of Auckland).

Next of Kin: Mr G. J. Richardson, Howick, Auckland (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2)) AWMM

  • It has been many years since my parents John and Annette Cathryn, me and my family has visited stockade hill, we had moved to Australia in 1990, but I will return one day to pay my respects to you and the cenotaph, and bring with me my own young family, I have a daughter and two sons. I am trying to locate your medals and memorabilia that was left at Aunty Judys house back when she died in late 1994, it's been many years of failed attempts, but we have not forgotten you or will give up. I will show the importance of Anzac to my young children and my sons will be proud to wear them one day I really hope we find them, in the meantime your legend will live on in our family. Love Clare
