  • Gladys was the daughter of Chaplain J.A. Luxford (N/N Anglo Boer War and 8/307A WW1) and worked alongside him at Walton-on-Thames.

    She paid her own way to England Volunteered at No 2 NZGH, then signed as a nursing VAD for a term of 6 months continuing to serve at No 2 NZGH. Waitress to Matron and Senior Sisters, No 2 New Zealand General Hospital, Walton on Thames. In correspondence filed on her service record Gladys also notes on the return voyage to New Zealand, 6 June 1919 aboard the Marama, she continued to serve as a nursing VAD.

    Did not qualify for Service medals, did not attest as a servicewoman AWMM
