From his commendation “Sergeant Brown was in charge of the orderlies of the Second New Zealand Surgical Team as from 26th Sep 1942 to 4th March 1943 and afterwards. He was outstanding as the assistant at all surgical operations, but also displayed organising ability and an enthusiastic desire to achieve the highest standard of treatment and comfort for the casualties. He cheerfully worked long hours and stress and strain, particularly at El Alamein [Egypt] and at Nofilia [Libya], and supervised the holding and nursing of patients, a fatiguing though welcomed service in excess of the prescribed duties of the team" AWMM
