"Spr. Fenton displayed outstanding courage and devotion to duty in operating a mine detector under most hazardous conditions during the attack on the west of Tel el Eisa on the night of 1/2 November 1942. There was little cessation in the bursting of mortar shells all about him, the minefields were covered by sharp machine-gun fire and Spr. Fenton, as the forward most member of the party was being repeatedly sniped at from an uncleared enemy pocket, but not once did he hesitate or delay in sweeping for mines. He operated the mine dector for more than two hours without relief, When it seemed certain that enemy fire would hold up operations Spr. Fenton calmly and fearlessly carried on and largely as a result of his devotion to duty and gallant example the lane was cleared without delay." Pomeroy and Beattie, p. 99 AWMM

  • Miss you Poppa,
Visited El Alamein War Memorial and its a beautiful place. Its worth a visit if you are ever up around Alexandria as they have done a wonderful job.
Best memory of Poppa is that he always bought me books, interesting books.
He was a great man and kind to us kids growing up.
Good on you Levon for writing what you did about our Poppa.

  • My dear loving Poppa.

The best man I ever met. Taught me to shoot, taught me everything. Loving Husband to my Nana who he called "Winnie". Father to my Mother Margaret. my Uncle Frank, my Auntie Ellen. Grandfather to my Cousin Carl and Vicki, and also Samantha and Guerin.
Pop was wounded by a German made "S mine" at the El Alamein conflict in WW2 while clearing mines under heavy shelling, mortar fire and machine gun harassment. He and his mens actions cleared a path that allowed heavy armor to pass and flank Rommel's Panzer divisions and drive the Germans back into retreat. His bravery saved many lives and allowed a victory which won him the Distinguished conduct medal.
Pop was discovered laying wounded by passing brass who ordered his rescue. Pop awoke on a medical ship. His left eye was blinded and shrapnel remained in his head until his last day.
I love you Poppa. I miss you.
