The Achilles, together with HMS Ajax and HMS Exeter, fought and badly damaged the German pocket battleship Graf Spee, forcing it to seek repairs in the nearby neutral port of Montevideo, Uruguay.The Graf Spee's captain susequently decided to scuttle his vessel outside the harbour entrance rather than have it sunk by the waiting New Zealand and British warships. The battle was one of the most famous naval actions of World War 2. AWMM
