  • Thirteen men, 2 instructors and 11 military personnel on an army alpine training course on Mt Ruapehu were caught by a blizzard. Two men trekked for 11 hours to raise the alarm. Six died on 13 August 1990 and only seven survived.

    Family planted a totara tree in remembrance near a memorial plaque. AWMM
