  • Nurse Mary Aitken trained at Christchurch Hospital and was subsequently promoted to Sister. She resigned her position in 1912 to travel to the UK.

    She enlisted with the British Red Cross Society (BRCS) on 28 October 1914 and worked in Boulogne as part of Unit No. 5 from 1st November 1914 supporting the British Expeditionary Force.

    An extract from a letter written by Sister Aitken was published in an article in Kai Tiaki, the Journal of the Nurses of New Zealand (April 1916). She writes: "she was night charge sister in a hospital of over 600 beds and had been asked by the matron-in-chief in France to join Queen Alexandra Reserve".

    Her Medal Index Card, held at National Archives, UK, records that she resigned from the BRCS on 24 July 1915 presumably to join Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve (QAIMNSR) AWMM
