  • Husband of Linda and father of Ann Hatherly.

Lieutenant D. M. Hatherly, MM; Tangiwai; born Marton, 16 Nov 1916; student; three times wounded. (Source: Kay, R. 27 (Machine Gun) Battalion. p.292.)

'The crew of a nearby anti-tank gun were killed or wounded, and three stretcher-bearers who set out from an ambulance towards them received a direct hit by a shell and left practically no trace. The machine-gunners also suffered casualties. Corporal Paterson was killed and Lance-Corporal Bertinshaw wounded. Lance-Sergeant Hatherly, leaving his trench to attend to Bertinshaw, ran to the ambulance, some 200 yards away, returned with stretcher-bearers, and despite the shellfire, mostly airbursts, evacuated the wounded man. Hatherly, who was slightly wounded, stayed with his platoon. He was awarded the MM.' (Source: Kay, R. 27 (Machine Gun) Battalion. p. 292.)

Douglas became a farmer at Tangiwai after the war and moved to the Bay of Islands once he retired. AWMM
