      Citation for Military Cross (MC): "For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty - This officer was in command of his company during an attack on the enemy position. The whole operation was most successfully carried out and although wounded he remained on duty until his company was relieved some considerable time later. He is a born leader and has done exceptionally good work." AWMM

      Citation for Military Medal (MM): "Assault on the Switch trench, South east of High Wood, 15th September 1916. During the assault on the Switch Trench on the 15th September all of the officers of this non-commissioned officer's company became casualties very early. This N.C.O. immediately assumed command of the company, and after successfully taking the trench showed great coolness and initiative in organising working parties and consolidating the trench under heavy shellfire."   • On 6 March 1917, Jesse was granted the temporary rank of Captain whilst acting as second in command of a Company in the field (NZ Gazette, No. 98, 14 June 1917). Promotion in the 'field' was rather rare. He relinquished the temporary rank when he was wounded on 22 July 1917 (NZ Gazette, No. 165). AWMM
