Johnny Simpson played rugby for army teams in Egypt and Italy and was selected for the famous Kiwi Forces rugby team of 1945-46 that toured Britain just after World War 2.

Selected for the All Blacks as a prop forward he toured Australia in 1947 and South Africa in 1949. In South Africa he played in 17 of the 24 tour games including the four tests. All the tests were lost.

Johnny Simpson was known as a prop of immense strength and a fast runner on the rugby field. His nickname was "Iron Man".

After retiring from rugby he continued his association with the game and was assistant coach with the Auckland teams during the great Ranfurly Shield reign of the early 1960s. In later years he was a President of Bowls NZ. AWMM
    • John played 30 matches for the All Blacks including 9 tests. He plated 21 matches for Auckland. He was a member of the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force rugby team 1945/46 (The Kiwis) which toured Britain and Europe. Public - Ian Banks - Researcher - 29 March 2021 - research
