  • Husband of Barbara Jane Roach. They had three children: Patricia, James and Kevin.

    Three brothers served in WW2: Hubert George Baker (25811), 28 Maori Battalion; Howard Charles Baker (12020) with the 6th Field Ambulance and Haare Baker (418225) with the Provost Company.

    Educated at Waerenga A Hika Native Boys' School, Ormond.

    Working on his uncle's, Frederick G. Baker, station in Tolaga Bay before the war.

    Attested 13 July 1940; entered camp 15 January 1942. He applied for the 28 Maori Battalion but was refused as his brother Hubert George Baker (25811), was already serving with the 28th Battalion.

    He met his wife in England. Barbara served as a WREN (WRNS 11833) and she was stationed at Dover before they married. They married in the Woodnesborough Parish Church in Kent, England. His wife embarked for New Zealand aboard the Rangitiki from London 30 May 1946.

    After the war he managed the Waihirere Blocks, Gisborne then managed Frederick Baker's property Maharahara Station, Tauwhareparae.

    In 1954 he was balloted a farm, 805 acres, in the Mahaki Rehabilitation Farm Settlement.

    He refused to accept all medals because although he served in North Africa, policing the Cairo and Maadi Camps, he was 3 months too late to qualify for the Africa Star. AWMM

  • My fathers period of overseas service was something he spoke little about. However the willingness of him and his brothers to commit themselves to the service of their country is something we could all continue to admire. Neither dad nor my mother (who also served as a WREN) ever spoke of any sense of adventure, in fact my mother was convinced that it was unlikely that she or her brothers would survive. Our generation have been the fortunate inheritors of the their willingness to perform their duty irrespective of the personal cost.
