MiD. 1943, for action by HMNZS Kiwi and HMNZS Moa against a Japanese submarine. "Salter and Bright refused to leave a signalman who was unconscious and severely injured on the bridge of the HMNZ Moa. These ratings realised that he could not be thrown into the water and therefore in the short time available, they fitted him with a life jacket and when the ship disappeared floated off supporting him. Their coolness and courage undoubtedly saved his life, and is considered particularly praise-worthy in view of the fact that they had no knowledge of the side towards which the ship would capsize." • Letter of Commendation (United States), 1943.

On the night of 29 January 1943, when HMNZS mine-sweepers 'Kiwi' and 'Moa' identified and attacked the Japanese submarine I-1, off the north west coast of Guadacanal. 'Kiwi' rammed it three times, and it ran aground and was destroyed.

Auckland War Memorial Museum has items on display in "Our small ships": a model of the Corvette mine-sweeper HMNZS 'Kiwi', the crests of the 'Kiwi' and 'Moa', a cap ribbon, HMNZS 'Kiwi', the sextant from the Japanese submarine I-1, and photographs of the 'Kiwi' at sea, the ship's company of HMNZS 'Kiwi' marching up Queen Street, Auckland, the remains of the Japanese submarine I-1 sunk off Guadalcanal, the HMNZS 'Kiwi' at Devonport Dockyards for repairs; and an Oerlikon cannon.

Awarded for saving life on sinking of HMNZS 'Moa' AWMM
