'There were sixty or seventy New Zealanders in one or other of the forts of Stalag XXA at Thorn, in Poland, until the camp was removed from the path of the Russian advance. Prisoners frequently went to Stalag XXA after completing a sentence at Graudenz military prison. The surrounding Arbeitskommandos employed prisoners mostly on farms, but also on forestry work, on the roads and in factories. The stalag was one of the oldest established camps and was very efficiently run. Its escape organisation had been responsible for the first escape of a New Zealand officer from Germany.
He had been recaptured after a previous attempt from Stalag XVIIIA/Z at Spittal-on-the-Drau only a fortnight earlier. On his transfer to Stalag XXA he and another British officer were given priority to escape, civilian clothes were arranged for them, and they were smuggled out as other ranks on 9 October 1943 to a working party at a rabbit farm. From there they and two other ranks were driven in a lorry to Bromberg, where a Polish factory manager put them up for the night and arranged their onward journey. They travelled by a closed van to Danzig and were each escorted by a Polish helper to a safe house in Gdynia. There they were smuggled onto a Swedish ship while she was loading coal. When she reached Sweden on 20 October they were handed over to the police, and were later looked after by the British Consul at Stockholm.' (Source: Mason, W.W. Prisoners of War. p. 291.) AWMM
